Enhancing data protection with Cloud-PBS: introducing storage synchronization
How Cloud-PBS synchronizes your Proxmox Backup Server data with object storage for enhanced redundancy and data protection.
Data protection is about layers. While Proxmox Backup Server provides excellent backup capabilities, having a single copy of your backups is still a risk. That’s why Cloud-PBS includes automatic storage synchronization to object storage.
What is storage synchronization?
Cloud-PBS automatically replicates your backup data from the primary PBS storage to redundant object storage. This creates an additional copy of your backups on a different storage tier, providing protection against:
- Primary storage hardware failure
- Data corruption
- Localized infrastructure issues
How it works
- Your Proxmox VE servers back up to your Cloud-PBS instance (primary PBS storage)
- Cloud-PBS automatically synchronizes backup data to object storage
- The synchronization runs continuously in the background
- Both copies are verified for integrity
Benefits
Enhanced durability
Object storage is designed for extreme durability (typically 99.999999999% — “11 nines”). Your backup data benefits from this level of protection without any additional configuration.
Transparent operation
Synchronization happens automatically. You don’t need to configure anything — it’s part of the Cloud-PBS service.
Cost-effective redundancy
Adding a second copy of your backups on your own infrastructure would require additional hardware and management. Cloud-PBS includes this redundancy in the service.
Combined with client-side encryption
When you use client-side encryption, both the primary and object storage copies are encrypted. This means your data is protected regardless of which storage layer it resides on.
