How to Migrate Proxmox Servers from a Provider to Another Using Cloud-PBS

Migrating servers between Proxmox server providers can be a complex task, but with Cloud-PBS, the process is significantly simplified. Cloud-PBS enables seamless backups and restores, allowing you to efficiently migrate servers from one Proxmox host to another. This guide will walk you through the migration process, emphasizing how Cloud-PBS ensures data security and integrity.

To start the migration, you first need to set up a Cloud-PBS instance. This instance will act as your central backup storage. The process begins by adding the Cloud-PBS instance as a backup storage on your current Proxmox node (Node 1). This integration is straightforward, as Cloud-PBS is designed to work seamlessly with Proxmox VE. Once added, you can initiate backups of your virtual machines and containers from Node 1 to the Cloud-PBS instance.

Next, set up the Cloud-PBS instance on your new Proxmox host (Node 2). Similar to the first node, add the Cloud-PBS instance as a backup storage. This dual setup allows Cloud-PBS to serve as a bridge between the two nodes, facilitating the transfer of data.

The actual migration process involves creating backups from Node 1 and restoring them on Node 2.
Once the backup is complete on Node 1, go to Node 2 and restore the backups from the Cloud-PBS instance. This method ensures that all your data is accurately transferred from the old Proxmox host to the new one.

An essential aspect of using Cloud-PBS for migration is data security. Proxmox Backup Server supports robust client-side encryption protocols, ensuring that your data is secure both in transit and at rest. If encryption is enabled, it adds an extra layer of security, requiring the encryption key for data access.
This means that during the restoration process on Node 2, you must provide the encryption key to read and restore the data.
You can check our documentation about how to deal with encryption and restore keys here.

Using Cloud-PBS for migration offers several benefits. First, it simplifies the migration process by centralizing backups and restores. You don’t need to manually transfer data between nodes, reducing the risk of errors and data loss. Additionally, the encryption feature provides peace of mind, knowing that your data is protected against unauthorized access.

Moreover, Cloud-PBS’s scalability means it can handle varying data volumes, making it suitable for both small-scale and large-scale migrations. Whether you are migrating a few virtual machines or an entire infrastructure, Cloud-PBS provides the tools to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.
